Roti vs. Rice: Which Is Better for Diabetes?

This is one of the most common questions in a Pakistani household managing diabetes. The honest answer is closer than most people expect.

Roti generally sits lower on the glycemic index than white basmati rice, which is why it's often recommended as the "better" choice. But glycemic index is only one part of the picture, and the gap between them is smaller than the reputation suggests.

The GI ranges genuinely overlap — a well-cooked, portioned basmati rice and a large or refined roti aren't dramatically different in isolation. Where roti tends to have a practical edge

  • Whole wheat atta usually carries more fiber than white basmati rice, which slows digestion.
  • Eating rotis one at a time makes it easier to notice and control how much you've had.
  • Roti is naturally eaten with less added fat than many rice dishes (biryani, pulao), which often include oil, ghee or meat fat cooked into the rice itself.

Where rice can hold its own

  • A modest, measured portion of rice paired with protein and vegetables can fit into a balanced meal just as well as roti can.
  • Cooling and reheating rice (or even just letting it cool before serving) modestly increases its resistant starch content, softening its impact somewhat.
  • Basmati specifically tends to have a lower GI than short-grain sticky rice varieties, due to its higher amylose content.
