Is Roti Good for Diabetes?

Roti contains carbohydrate, so it can raise blood sugar. That does not automatically mean you have to stop eating it.

Roti is one of the most common carbohydrate foods in Pakistani meals. Because carbohydrates are broken down into glucose, the amount of roti you eat can affect your blood sugar. The practical question is not whether roti is universally good or bad. It is how much you eat, what it is made from, what you eat with it and how your body responds.

Roti is a carbohydrate food

Whole-wheat atta can provide more fiber than highly refined flour, but both types still contribute carbohydrate. A larger roti or several rotis will generally provide more carbohydrate than a smaller serving. Added ghee or oil can also change the energy content of the meal.

Changing from white flour to whole wheat may improve the nutritional profile, but it does not make portion size irrelevant.

What should you eat with roti?

Roti is usually easier to fit into a balanced meal when it is paired with protein and plenty of non-starchy vegetables. Examples include chicken with sabzi, daal with bhindi, or fish with mixed vegetables. A meal built around roti alone may be less balanced and may be harder to keep satisfying.

  • Consider the size of the roti, not just the number.
  • Pair roti with vegetables and protein.
  • Be mindful of ghee, butter and oil added during preparation.
  • If your care plan includes glucose checks, compare similar meals over time to understand your personal response.

How many rotis can a person with diabetes eat?

There is no single number that fits everyone. Medication, body size, activity, other foods in the meal and personal glucose targets all matter. Someone taking mealtime insulin may need a different carbohydrate plan from someone managing type 2 diabetes without insulin. Your clinician or dietitian can help set a portion that fits your treatment plan.

Note: A useful experiment

Keep the meal similar on different days and change only one thing, such as the roti portion. If you are advised to monitor after meals, this can help reveal patterns without guessing.
