Can People With Diabetes Eat Rice?

Rice can raise blood sugar because it contains carbohydrate, but many people with diabetes can still include it in a balanced meal.

Rice is not automatically forbidden if you have diabetes. The main issue is that rice is a concentrated source of carbohydrate, and larger portions generally mean more carbohydrate entering the meal. Your medication and personal glucose response also matter.

Why portion size matters

The amount of carbohydrate has a major effect on how much glucose becomes available after digestion. This is why a large plate of rice can affect blood sugar differently from a smaller portion served with chicken, vegetables and other foods.

What about basmati rice?

Basmati rice is still a carbohydrate food. Some varieties and preparation methods may produce different glucose responses, but there is no universal rice that makes portion size unimportant. If you choose basmati, treat it as one part of the meal rather than a free food.

The best rice choice is not always the one with the most impressive label. The amount you eat and the meal around it can matter just as much.

Make the rice meal more balanced

  • Serve rice with a generous portion of non-starchy vegetables.
  • Add protein such as chicken, fish, eggs, daal or other pulses.
  • Avoid turning a rice meal into rice plus another large starch portion.
  • Pay attention to restaurant portions, which can be much larger than you expect.

Should you test after eating rice?

If your healthcare professional has advised you to check blood glucose after meals, recording the meal and the timing of the reading can help you identify patterns. Compare similar situations rather than drawing conclusions from one unusual reading.

See your patterns over time

Log rice meals and glucose readings in one place instead of trying to remember them later.
