HbA1c Explained
A home glucose reading is a snapshot. HbA1c helps show the bigger picture over roughly the previous three months.

HbA1c, also called A1C, is a blood test that estimates your average blood glucose exposure over roughly the previous three months. It does this by measuring the percentage of hemoglobin with glucose attached to it.
Common diagnostic ranges
- Below 5.7%: normal range for diagnosis.
- 5.7% to 6.4%: prediabetes range.
- 6.5% or higher: diabetes range when used and interpreted according to diagnostic criteria.
For many adults already living with diabetes, a common A1C goal is below 7%, but your personal goal may be different.
Why A1C is not the whole story
An average can hide important ups and downs. Two people can have a similar A1C while having very different daily patterns. Home glucose checks or CGM data can show when highs and lows are happening.
“A1C tells you about the journey. Day-to-day readings help explain what happened along the road.”
When A1C may be less reliable
Some conditions can affect A1C accuracy, including certain anemias, kidney failure, liver disease, blood disorders, blood loss, transfusions and pregnancy. Tell your clinician about conditions that may affect the result.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to fast for an HbA1c test?
The A1C test itself does not require fasting, although other tests ordered at the same visit might.
